In my blog My Third Leg, I talked about three essential products I use to keep me safe during intermittent instability situations.

Starting simple was very helpful to me. I developed a checklist of what I was looking for in a cane; stability assistive device.

After in-depth intensive research, I chose the following two walking canes to try. I figured I didn’t need two, but I wanted to try them both. Using them for six months, here’s what I discovered and experienced.

1) Vive Folding Cane

The Vive Folding Cane  is adjustable (33” to 37”) and fits me perfectly. The brown, gold and black leopard pattern on it is great for my more sassy side.

Compact and foldable, it can easily go anywhere with me. It is very sturdy and has not let me down yet. (Lol, pun intended.)

Made of aluminum, it’s light but sturdy, supporting up to 250 lbs. Great for when it rains because you can just wipe it off when it gets wet or messy. No muss, no fuss. I can put it in the front or back of my car and grab it before getting out.

I live in the northern Midwest, so ice and snow is a real thing in the winter. Due to the slip resistant rubber tip, I didn’t have any problems with slipping on the ice, snow, or wet pavement.

A nylon storage bag and wrist strap are provided, along with a sturdy clamp to hold it tight when the cane is collapsed.

Although cheaper than the wooden one, I was a bit concerned it wouldn’t be as stable as my husband’s wooden one. However, I have found it to be very sturdy and reliable.

2) Asterom Handcrafted Walking Cane

The Asterom Handcrafted Walking Cane is beautiful, a real work of art, handmade in the Ukraine.

Sturdy oak wood is used, which is stylish and sophisticated, and supports up to 300 lbs.

Ergonomically designed derby handle provides a very smooth wooden surface with no risk of splinters.

The on-line directions tell you how to measure for a perfect individual fit. I’m 5’2”. A 32-inch fits me perfectly.

Boxed from the manufacturer, the handle, collar ring and main body of the cane are packed separately for easy assembly by the user. An extra rubber tip and wrist strap are also enclosed.

There are several different choices of color. Mine is #2 caramel.

On the Asterom store website, you can purchase different collar rings, handle designs, and quad cane tip if you need it.

Asterom also provide life-time support and an additional one-year warranty.

Because I have had wrist surgery in the past, I chose an ergonomic derby handle, as you can see in the accompanying pictures.

A bit more expensive, but the quality and handcrafted beauty are worth it.

I love both canes. They have their own individual uses and both continue to serve me well.

3) Fanwer Extendable Shoe Horn

My knee pain also caused difficulties getting my shoes and boots on and off. The extra effort caused the pain in my knee to worsen.

Back to the internet. After more research, I found the perfect thing!

The Fanwer Extendable Shoe Horn

It’s adjustable, so matter how tall or short you are, you can find the right length to help you with your shoes.

Although metal, it’s smooth and doesn’t cause any friction with your socks or the shoes. There is a spring just above the head of the horn that lets it flex as you put your shoes on.

It has been a back and a leg saver. I don’t know why I haven’t had one sooner! I actually loved it so much I ordered another to have upstairs.

I love this product.

Conclusion

Both walking canes and the shoe horn accomplish the goal of providing stability and safety, when life and your body may throw you a curve.

These products have earned my trust. Trust, to me, is of the upmost importance in choosing a product. If a company earns my trust, living up to their claims, I’m in.

I hope you enjoyed this product review and found it helpful, informative and educational.
